Martin Luther—Celebration of Reformation Day                                October 28/29, 2017

500 year Anniversary!

October 31, 2017 commemorates the 500th anniversary of Reformation Day. That’s the day when an Augustinian Monk named Martin Luther posted 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg church in Germany and revolutionized forever what it means to be a Christ-follower and to live that faith out in the culture.

For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”  Romans 1:17 (NIV)  This was the Bible verse that changed Luther’s life, and the life of millions.

Hymn:  A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing…Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing…

How did Martin Luther change the church service, as we know it today?

  • He brought in Congregational Singing!
  • He made the Sermon central to the church service!
  • He changed Communion, from “transubstantiation” to “consubstantiation”
  • Martin Luther changed clergy celibacy rules, so that priests & nuns could marry
